STRENGTHS

Intro

Seth Curry, the younger brother of Steph, is no slouch as a shooter even compared to his older sibling. At 6'2" he plays mostly two-guard and is a deadly off-ball weapon in the half-court. He can also handle a bit for you, make some plays for others, and will compete on the defensive end.

Super Sniper

The late-blooming pro is a bonafide sharpshooter from all around the arc. Not all three-pointers are created equal, and Seth hits the tough ones with a high degree of consistency. He can shoot off-the-bounce, off movement, and of course when spotting up.

Curry canned an insane 47% of his catch-and-shoot treys in 2021-2022 on good volume. 48.6% was his mark the previous year in Philly. In that 2021-2022 season, he was in the 96th percentile for spot-up scoring on the whole.

Seth is excellent at staying within his offensive role yet obliging when his coaching staff lengthens his leash a bit. Selectiveness as a shooter and some incredible clips from deep have allowed for some great overall field goal percentages. Such is a true rarity for an undersized guard.

With 54.9 percent of his points being three-balls, Seth remained efficient on the whole in 2019-2020. He spaced the floor out for players like Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis, and Tim Hardaway Jr. to go to work.

Throughout his career, he has done the same admirable job for Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and others.

Freeing Himself Up

Seth blazes off screens to free himself for catch-and-shoot bombs. He gets ten toes to the rim and has incredible balance as he raises on the catch. When defenders stay attached he can still drain shots in their face, hitting 40.4% from deep with a defender "tight" in 2020-2021 (2-4 feet away).

A pretty high set point for his height and a quick release allow him to remain effective while shooting at just 6'2". Seth's misses are mostly short or long rather than being off line - a mark of a great shooter.

Curry ended up third in the Association for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 with 45% + three-point clips. Among qualified players, he remained in the top-six for both 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.

Curls & Cuts

He comes into DHO's smoothly and even cuts well as the buzzing off-ball mover he is. Handoff-wise, he must be defended well, or else he's firing an accurate jumper from downtown. Curry dribble drives against trailing defenders to the tune of 4.9 2021-2022 drives per game where he shot 55.8% on them.

Two-Point Accuracy

While just an middling rim finisher on slim volume, he has great touch on little floaters. It is something in his bag to use against big rim-protectors. Seth hit exactly half (76/152) of his non-restricted area paint shots in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 combined.

The Duke product is very accurate on his two-point jumpers as well. They just aren't nearly as big a part of his shot breakdown as the three. In 2019-2020 he swished an absurd 54.6% from the midrange with more makes than Kemba Walker, Jimmy Butler, and Zach LaVine.

Basic Playmaking & Transition Shooting

Drive-and-dishing is a specialty of Seth's as a playmaker. He gives you positive assist-to-turnover ratios basically every year. Additionally, the team-first Curry selflessly makes the extra pass when appropriate.

Seth weaponizes his perimeter shot-making in transition scenarios as well. He flares to the wing or deep corner to pull his man away from the rim. If foolishly left open, Curry knocks down these looks with ease. He is also a red alert for defenses to find off of broken plays.

Effort on Defense

Just like his brother, Seth brings energy on the defensive end of the floor to cover up for some physical limitations. He plays with his feet first, containing non-nuclear ball-handlers with prime positioning. He's also an intelligent defensive guard which lends itself to solid off-ball defense as well.

Fortunately for his team and coach, Curry's effort level will always be there on defense. One clear example of an effort-based contribution is his point of attack work.

Hustling over screens or sliding under to stymie drives, Seth was firmly in the 58th percentile defending these ball-handlers in 2021-2022 as a 76er.

He does some other little things like battling to front the post so that the catch is difficult on mismatches. Seth will also step in for some charges and dive on the deck for loose balls. He had more loose balls recovered per-36 than Brandon Ingram and Royce O'Neale (2019-2020).

WEAKNESSES

Stuck at Two

Curry is cemented into an off-guard role mostly because of his limitations as a playmaker. Steph, despite being an inch taller even, can stick at the one because of his handles + court vision. Seth is stuck at the two for the most part despite being a small player.

At 6'2" with subpar length, executing lobs to dive men is made difficult for Seth. The defense can swallow him up as he attacks downhill out of the pick-and-roll. This hurts both his passing and scoring at this juncture.

He can only create so much for himself despite being the size of an archetypical point guard. Seth is not a break-down-the-defense type of guard and is much better at attacking angles. This undeveloped iso/shot creation ability eliminates him from being a dependable end-of-clock option for his squad.

Undersized on Defense

The size issues that cause problems on offense are too a concern on defense. He absolutely must be matched up with a guard or simply cast in a chaser role to remain effective.

Combining 2018-2019 and 2019-2020, the undersized Seth allowed forwards he checked to shoot 98 of 194 from the field (over 50% FG%).

His relatively short arms at 6'4" zap his potential to be a big-time disruptor. While he may play passing lanes well, his middling wingspan, subpar speed, and overall mediocre athleticism make it difficult to collect steals. Curry tends to average less than a steal per game and not many deflections either.

Seth Curry doesn't add much in the rebounding department. Once again, this is due to a lack of size rather than a lack of effort. 2021-2022 had him at just 3.4 total rebounds per-36 minutes.
