STRENGTHS
Intro
Davion Mitchell is a bulldog guard who takes his job on defense extremely seriously. Lacking plus-height, he makes up for that with other athletic traits in spades – burst, agility, short-distance closing speed, balance, and functional core strength. Off-ball scoring and on-ball passing have come around for him, rounding out his game nicely as a starting-level PG.
Scoring Role
On first blush, Mitchell may appear to fall short given his nominal point guard status and the offensive load expectations therein. While there is a case to be made there, he would not be the first member of this sort of newer player build – a 3-and-D style point guard. This ended up helping Davion fit very additively beside bigger scorers such as Scottie Barnes, Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo, and now Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The shooting has slowly and steadily gotten more dependable for the 6-foot guard. Pulling up for the dribble-up three in P&R’s may never be a legitimate weapon for Davion as it is for the best guards in the game. However, he can hit spot-up threes at a strong level.
The former Bear took 145 catch-and-shoot threes in 2024-2025 and drained 39.3% of them. He finished 2025-2026 with an overall clip of 39.5% for all three-pointers taken-impressive growth since his early days. Mitchell’s shooting is made even more valuable as he can offer that rarer above-the-break 3PT shooting. Distance shooting from this geographical court zone is harder to find and thus is a more valuable piece of your off-ball profile.
Dribble Drives
Greater shooting gravity over the years has helped unlock what was always a latent strength for the explosive Davion – aggressive driving to the hole. Mitchell attacks closeouts well and is a genuine threat to score or pass here. Broken-shell defenses must quickly rotate, or else Davion will often keep that advantage alive into a score for himself or a partner.
Mitchell is impactful as a cutter too. Speed and timing help him out in these spots. By nature of his size, he leans on his floater game here as the big lurks. He shot 47.7%, a high figure, on driving floaters in 2024-2025.
Set-Ups
Davion sets up his teammates in myriad positive ways. He can play pick-and-roll and is good at breaking the first layer of defense to then locate a teammate for a high-percentage look. Mitchell’s kick-outs in particular look good on film.
In the Miami Heat’s 2025-2026 unique offense with minimal ball-screens, Mitchell thrived as a playmaker. Cutting, driving into gaps, and turning the corner off of hand-offs are all ways for him to get downhill and look to assist. The six-footer also functions well as a one-more passer in larger team passing sequences.
"Off-Night"
The Baylor product owns one of the best nicknames in the NBA. This was a moniker earned through building a reputation of pestering, hounding on-ball defense. His pressuring, quantitatively and qualitatively, will lead to counterpart player struggles.
He ranked in the 94th percentile for his isolation defense work while a Toronto Raptor (2024-2025). 77th percentile was where he landed there for pick-and-roll initiator resistance. Regardless of play type defended, Davion is sure to never let a lack of effort or preparedness be reasons for limited impact.
Schematic Versatility
Davion offers versatility in the types of schemes he can succeed within. There is ample value when your point guard can fit into switching schemes, be smart, communicative, and rangy in zones, or be a hawk chasing over ball screens. He is also a great option to stick on off-ball offensive star guards, making their jobs more effortful if nothing else.
Mitchell can also capably handle some bigger guards and wings despite only standing 6’0” tall. As is the successful model for most undersized players, his job begins with the off-ball fight for positioning/angles. After the catch, his muscle and personnel knowledge help him put up a fight despite giving up inches.
Perimeter Events-Creation
Davion is great at forcing turnovers. His way of doing so tends to be much closer to the on-ball side of the spectrum rather than being a long, disruptive, lane-playing type of defender. This explains the statistical gap between his steals/deflections rates as compared to his overall turnovers-forced numbers.
Mitchell loves to play fast and turn defense into offense for easy points. Getting out in transition is always relatively efficient offense for teams, so his offensive impact lies here too. His shorter stature renders his passing more threatening than his scoring in these instances.
Finding this caliber of on-ball defense can be difficult for NBA GM’s. This is what got Davion NBA minutes as a youngster and remains the biggest part of his value portfolio as a more seasoned player who’s added more skills.
WEAKNESSES
Creation Limitations
Davion is a point guard because of his size. His scoring ability, pull-up shooting, free-throw accuracy, load-bearing, and team-leading ability are more wing-like (in a negative sense). Mitchell is like many NBA players – having some great strengths, however ones that would be more impactful (or more accurately, less limiting) if packaged into a taller, longer frame. Size remains the name of the game in the NBA.
He also does not get to the line very often, nor is he a wholly efficient player. A lack of size is at least partially to blame for a lot of that. His adjusted true-shooting + (where league average is 100) from 2022-2023 to 2024-2025 are as follows: 94. 96, 99. He is no black hole on offense, but a starting-level point guard is preferred to be posting above-average rates here (typically buoyed by much better free-throw clips than what Davion gives you).
Shortness
With size reigning supreme, Davion is one of the more diminutive minutes-getting NBA players. Making up for this at times with strength and guile help keep him on the floor. However, it can be tough for him to match up against even a position or two up the ladder.
2023-2024 and 2024-2025 both saw poor statistics when guarding forwards. Both seasons saw these opponents shoot 55% or better from the field when standing against the guard from Georgia. Off-ball, impact is limited through his shorter wingspan of 6’4” in a league where many wing defenders have a reach closer to 7’0”.
