STRENGTHS
Intro
The 6'4" guard originally out of Villanova is a scrappy, athletic player with good feel. DiVincenzo is a top-end perimeter defender and strong events creator here. He's a gap-filler on the other end who cuts, passes, gets on the glass, can catch-and-go, and hit deep threes.
Intuitive Off-Ball Play
Donte is an excellent off-ball mover as most Villanova Wildcats tend to be. His high feel for the game is evident in his off-ball play here. He will always look to make himself a threat and/or potentially bend the defense through hard, timely cuts.
As another 'Nova staple, he not only cuts to score or pass but will cut for nothing more than to move defenses or cause confusion. Donte is also a willing and effectual off-ball screener. He can interestingly play either the role of off-ball screener or be the player coming off these picks to attack.
He continues his off-ball play with the ability to sink spot-up threes. He's been up over 39% on spot-up treys for most of his seasons. His reliable deep-range catch-and-shooting tends to garner closeouts that he can proceed to attack.
DiVo's shooting really peaked in his age-27 Knicks season playing alongside his Nova teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. He cleared 40% on all of his three-point shots on massive volume.
Snap-Decisions Off-the-Catch
The former Wildcat brings some verve by making decisive choices on the catch. He'll select from shooting, driving, or passing in a snap. DiVincenzo loves to "stampede" or "run through" the catch, exploiting the momentum of his man.
Donte has enough speed and wiggle to attack the rim after a swing-swing. He'll consider finishing with a layup but seems to prefer looking for the next read – sometimes to a fault. Overall though, he gave you 4.9 drives per night for 2024-2025 in Minnesota.
Underrated Distribution
The Big Ragu is perhaps a bit underrated in terms of his ability to make plays for others. He can operate from the top, drive-and-kick, be a selfless dot-connector, and even be trusted to initiate ball screen actions. DiVincenzo notches healthy AST/TO ratios each year.
There is also some volume behind his passing play. He led to 521 points for teammates across his 2020-2021 year with the Bucks. That beat Jaylen Brown, Tyler Herro, and Gordon Hayward's numbers. With the Timberwolves now, his connective on-and-off-ball passing eases life for higher-usage teammates.
Added Scoring Areas
He rounds out his offense by scoring via DHO's, coming off screens, and being a strong multi-faceted transition player. There is something in common with all of these actions/playtypes. When Donte can attack a ready-made advantage or an undermanned defense in front of him, he will make great decisions.
Steady Outside Defense
The combo guard stays solid as a perimeter defender. He's a principled isolation defender who rarely gets baited into lurching into the opponent which can lead to foolish fouls. If you want to see what "playing with your feet first" looks like, you should watch game film of Donte's defense.
He also stands out as a really strong screen navigator. Back in Milwaukee, his ability to athletically get over ball screens and pursue/rear-view contest was key to making their deep drop system flourish. He continues to use good footwork and plays with the requisite energy to continually bother pick-and-roll and DHO artists.
Donte also just simply plays harder than his opponent on a lot of nights. His game-to-game, and within that play-to-play compete level is always at a 10. Even when a switch gives the opponent a big size advantage, he'll fight to deny them a clean entry pass/deep positioning.
Astute Team Defender
Donte is on point with his rotations away from the play. His speed enables him to practically carry out what his mental instincts are telling him to do. These calculated off-ball movements can lead to steals, or much less glamorously simply fizzle out a would-be advantage.
His superb off-ball instincts and defensive court-mapping abilities hold against the stress test of myriad different contexts. DDV can make a difference as the sink-and-fill guy, can jut out to intercept the ball and go the other way. In transition scenarios, his strong defense still plays as he looks to stomp out prospective options for the opponent.
Takeaway Threat
As a hybrid guard, one of the defensive expectations is to wreak some havoc with steals and deflections. Donte is always up to the task. He'll pickpocket steals on-ball or play the passing lanes to accrue them there. DiVincenzo plays an in-your-face style of ball-hawking against twitchy handlers, however, does well to refrain from fouling.
Donte sniffs 2 steals per-36 in most seasons. In Sacramento, he averaged 3.4 deflections per-36 – the same figure as Bruce Brown and Patrick Beverley. Amassing these counting stats is what helps fuel his solid all-encompassing defensive metrics (e.g., 2+ defensive win shares in his full seasons). 2024-2025 saw him at 3.5 deflections per-36.
Point Guard Defense
The athletic Delaware native can do an admirable job containing zippy guards. He steps outside of the traditional 3-and-D wing mold with this keen ability to legitimately guard point guards. Donte leans on anticipatory skills, guile, and rapid feet re-positioning here.
Donte spends a lot of time on guards and forwards alike. Susceptible to big muscle, he's best suited to match up against ball-handling guards and off-ball shooter types. There is no notable drop-off between his off- and on-ball defense, so if his man gets the rock the defense is still in good shape.
WEAKNESSES
Incomplete Scorer
Donte has some clear weak points that begin with his poor interior finishing. He is athletic and has bounce, so these consistently anemic paint figures are somewhat perplexing. He can't seem to get out of the 50%'s at-the-rim, at times being inexcusably in the 40% (2021-2022).
His troubles continue as you make your way beyond the rim. His floater numbers are also bad, as well as his midrange clips. At the very least, ironing out a reliable runner could be key to unlocking further offensive value for DiVincenzo.
Smallish/Shorter Wingspan
DDV's interior defense could be better given that the bulk of his value derives from this end. His help instincts are there but he is not the most physically imposing for most drivers. A short wingspan of 6'6" prevents him from being a better contester in the paint.
He's a little too small to guard some bonafide wings. Donte tips the scales at just over 200 pounds so he is best kept away from the musclebound forwards out there. Lastly, thus far he has not been as healthy as you'd like.
