STRENGTHS

Intro

UC Santa Barbara product Gabe Vincent is a hustling, competitive, scrappy guard. He is capable if unspectacular across multiple areas on offense. Defensively, he provides strong ball pressure abilities on like-sized guards.

PG Fundamentals

The 6'3" guard with an (unofficial) 6'7" wingspan offers some stabilizing skills on offense as someone who stays in his role. He can organize a half-court set as a capable one-guard, sporting a robust 4.2 AST/TO ratio in 2023-2024. The unsexy stuff that remains important for a PG are things he can do – entry passes, on-target deliveries to movement shooters, and good pace with getting into sets.

Organizer

In a more archetypical, capturable sense, Gabe brings some pick-and-roll ball-handler chops. He surprisingly has a nice little dribble-in midrange game. That is a zone he shot north of 50% in across 2022-2023.

The 6'3" guard is more pass-first in these actions though, looking to set up featured teammates. He remains enough of an off-the dribble threat who can deter switching in these two-man actions. Vincent has some modest blow-by ability that marries nicely with his quick step-back jumper.

Favorite Scoring Areas

He can score or play-make via DHO's too. His 1.1 DHO points per game were the same for guys like Anthony Edwards, Kyle Kuzma, and Grayson Allen in 2022-2023.

Gabe can pull up on these chances when bigs sag. He will otherwise consider attacking the feet of the big man if a full switch takes place. Lastly, he can routinely make the right pass to divers like Anthony Davis and Rui Hachimura.

Spacing

His offensive malleability lends itself to multi-guard and/or otherwise diverse lineups. He can be a bit streaky but he nailed 38.6% of his catch-and-shoot threes as recently as 2021-2022. Gabe can shoot the ball, however, staying healthy enough to get into a sustained rhythm can be an issue for him. Vincent has a quick release and can space out a few steps beyond the line.

Defensive Pest

Gabe brings defensive activity as an on-ball pest. He shuffles his feet very well. Vincent is also a bit stronger than his frame suggests and is unafraid to absorb sternum blows by his man.

While some catch-all metrics like defensive BPM and def-win shares paint him around average on this end, the California native does some stuff that may go unnoticed or under-quantified.

For one, he will shave the same valuable early shot-clock seconds off by applying early ball pressure. As well, he can tucker out off-ball players looking to run their curls and cuts cleanly.

Deflections & Charges

Away from the ball, Gabe does a couple of things quite well. The first is being able to collect some deflections. Speed helps, but most of these are on the back of his anticipatory instincts. His 130 2022-2023 deflections equalled Derrick White's total.

The other nice component of his off-ball defense is willing charge-taking. He drew 8 of them across 2022-2023, tied for 19th-most in the NBA. The former Guacho steps in early and is willing to be cut down by that stampeding driver.

WEAKNESSES

Creation Limits

Vincent is limited as an on-ball events creator on offense. This is problematic given both his size and his positional expectations. His limitations trickle down into lineup constructions as the coach must supplement around Gabe with more playmaking.

Gabe iso'd just 0.3 times per contest in 2022-2023, knowing this is far from a strength. He had a higher volume of ball screen possessions, however had just middle-of-the-pack productivity at 0.88 points per chance. His uninspiring 32.5% pull-up three-point mark was part of this mediocrity.

Middling Interior & Exterior Clips

Vincent does not apply much downhill pressure as a diminutive, non-elite athleticism, guard. He is speedy but lacks the deep dribbling/hesitation package and the around-the-rim bounce needed to overcome those size issues. Even when there, he rarely draws fouls and finishes at substandard clips (below 56% in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023).

Gabe is a solid connector off-ball but he is a notch below where one would like as a shooter. He can make tough, deep threes however the overall consistency is not quite there over full seasons.

Defense Size Restrictions

Vincent is a helpful defensive guard to have in your squad. He is not however positionally versatile for who he can guard. Gabe tends to spend about two-thirds of his time on guards, with things often going south when checking anyone bigger than that (forwards shot >50% against in him 2022-2023).

His other notable defensive flaw is his paint defense. A smart, alert, active team defender, Gabe can be useful in a number of geographical court areas. Despite some charge-taking, the basket is not one of those places at just 6'3", 200 pounds.
